Holjadre Press is a collaborative project that brings together visual artists and poets to produce limited edition hand-made books at Self Help Graphics Arts.

This edition of 50 books features linocut, woodcut, and silkscreen prints by visual artists Victoria Delgadillo, Emilia Garcia, Yolanda Gonzalez, Leslie Gutierrez Saiz, and Poli Marichal, alongside original poetry written by Gloria Enedina Alvarez, Pat Payne, Reina Alejandra Prado, Carmen Vega, and Alicia Vogl Saenz. All these artists have deep roots in the Los Angeles’ cultural milieu and have contributed throughout their careers to the rich legacy of collaborative endeavors at Self Help Graphics.

Inspired by the Maestras Atelier and the tradition of book making, Hojaldre Press only selected women artists for the first project. The book, entitled (in)permanencia features work that addresses the complexity of biculturalism and transnational ties, as read in the playful adaptation of code switching read in the book title (in)permanencia. The book also illustrates in both visual and literary media a sense of temporality in each of these artists’ lives.

Collectively the ten artists have shared their work with international audiences in Austria, Cuba, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Scotland, and Spain to highlight a few, as well have endeavored in artistic projects for the last 15-30 years attesting to the range of artistic practice and make-up of Angelenos, multi-disciplinary talents with an attention to intergenerational dynamics.
